I’m just going to give you a little heads-up about Azure, as I want to get a briefing by them in January, but this is pretty cool: http://www.azuredynamics.com/about_azure.htm Incorporated in 1997, Vancouver-based Azure Dynamics’ principal business lies in the development and commercialization of control systems for hybrid electric and electric vehicle powertrains. Azure vehicles are used for mail delivery, parcel delivery, taxi services, beverage delivery, packaged goods delivery and utility vehicles and shuttle bus operations. The company actually just this month announced the unveiling of its first hybrid electric CitiBus. Azure’s CitiBus was introduced at the Electric Drive Transportation Association (“EDTA”) annual conference being held this year in Vancouver, British Columbia. B.C. Environment Minister Barry Penner attended the unveiling of Azure’s CitiBus. Some background on their technology that I’ve taken the liberty to pull from their website: Azure’s HEV systems incorporate an electric motor, an energy source such as batteries, and an additional energy source such as a combustion engine/generator. The combustion engine, the additional energy source, usually operates at its most efficient point. Having on-board power allows hybrids to selectively choose the energy source that is most efficient for powering the vehicle while in a particular drive cycle. For example, electric motors are very efficient in low speed/high torque applications, while combustion engines perform better at mid- to higher speeds. Using these two power sources individually, or in combination, yields a more efficient vehicle. Azure’s patented software when configured with conventional engineering and design creates a superior product that answers the major fleet operators’ concerns: reduced emissions, increased fuel economy and competitive lifecycle costs. With good design, HEVs can also achieve several times the fuel efficiency of a conventionally-powered vehicle. As HEVs become a commercial success, there will be significant advantages to the environment, fuel conservation and the economy. If you’re a commercial fleet operator, and interested in learning more – check this out: http://www.azuredynamics.com/commercial_fleet.htm. Happy holidays to all, and write at you soon…!
