The Abrams Clean Tech Report

Clean Tech As A Subject of Study.

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Most of my business is based on referrals, and inevitably, I end up focusing a good chunk of my time on helping companies address strategy questions, competitive issues, business development and positioning issues leveraging much of my experience gained in past ‘lives’, if you will. However, my personal focus is on ‘green’ tech. I spend my time not spent working on what I refer to as ’straight tech projects’ providing advisory services, business development, strategy and sales support to companies - both for-profit and not-for-profit - focused on renewable energy, water technologies, solar power and the like, because what these companies are focused on resonates so strongly with my own personal values - and how I grew up - out on 12 acres of land in Western Oregon. Call me a treehugger - because that’s what I am at heart.

I grew up learning that living in harmony with nature as much as possible was for me, key to a centered inner life. It still is. And doing my part to take care of the environment around me, and doing more with less, are aspects of life that I want to continue to honor, no matter where my life takes me. So helping to build businesses around technologies and solutions that ‘leave no trace’ as much as possible I personally find challenging, interesting, and rewarding. And I do believe that we all collectively need to do our part to ensure that companies working to push clean energy and water solutions to market actually GET to market.

I’ve been a supporter of environmental and wilderness supporting initiatives for a long time, but I really got started focusing on clean tech when I was trying to figure out who was really focused on addressing how ‘green’ or ‘ungreen’ supply chains in various industries were, as I was building my business. Having focused on online markets, supply chain management, eprocurement and global transportation management technologies for a while, I decided that for all the technology we had managed to get into the economy, and for how sophisticated companies had technologically become, I still was unclear as to how effectively companies were managing - and focusing on - a ‘leave no trace’ philosophy in their daily operations. Essentially, I wanted to start learning more about how we could create cleaner supply chains - i.e. ‘greener’ supply chains - and who was involved in the thinking around this idea, as much as the process of executing on this thinking. So - these initial questions have led me to where I am today. I write a Clean Tech Blog - it’s mostly my own brain dump for myself, and it allows me to explore a number of technologies and technology vendors, as well as organizations, so that I can better understand who’s doing the best job of actively answering some of these questions, what makes it the ‘best’ vs. ‘better’, and how they’re doing it.

So, if you’d like to chat about some clean tech stuff - let me know. Happy to chat. I’m spending most of this year and part of next focused on studying water technologies, in case you’re interested to know.
