A preview of our award-winning film

In the early 1900s, the Hetch Hetchy Valley was a wonder to behold. Naturalist John Muir dubbed it Yosemite’s twin and considered it “one of nature’s rarest and most precious mountain temples.” Then, it was flooded.

Find out about the dam’s turbulent history and what’s being done to restore this natural landscape in the trailer of our award-winning Discover Hetch Hetchy movie.

An evening of environmental films:

Ride of the Mergansers
Steve Furman

The Hooded Merganser is a rare and reclusive duck found only in North America. Every spring in the Great Lakes region, the wary hen lays and incubates her eggs in a nest high in the trees. Just 24 hours after hatching, the tiny ducklings must make the perilous leap to the ground below to begin life in the wild. Enjoy footage of these ducklings rarely observed by humans, and experience a heartwarming blend of natural history, drama, and even comedy. Best Short Documentary, Northern Lights Film Festival. (United States, 2004, 11:34 min.)

The True Cost of Food
Tate Hausman, Free Range Graphics

Learn the truth behind your weekly grocery bills. The hidden environmental, health, and social costs of agribusiness food is scary, to say the least. This great animated piece shows that anything but local organic food is unaffordable. (United States, 2004, 15 min.)

Tales of the San Joaquin
Christopher Beaver

The second longest river in California, the San Joaquin has been called “the hardest working river in America” by many people—and “the most abused” by others. Once the birthplace of hundreds of thousands of salmon, the river now runs completely dry year- round—in two separate sections. Tales of the San Joaquin faces this harsh reality, but it also reveals how the doors have opened for the river’s eventual rebirth. Honorable Mention, Wild and Scenic Film Festival, 2006. Pare Lorentz Award Nominee, International Documentary Association (United States, 2004, 28 min.)

INTERMISSION (15 MIN)

Buyer Be Fair
John de Graaf, Hana Jindrova

These days, you may think you are a conscious shopper by buying organic and non-GMO food. But take it one step further. The new rule in the consumer revolution is fair trade. From Amsterdam to Vancouver, and Seattle to Oaxaca, people are supporting fair trade coffee and FSC certified wood retailers and producers committed to providing fair wages and good employment opportunities to economically disadvantaged artisans and farmers worldwide. Honorable Mention, Wild and Scenic Film Festival, 2006. (United States, 2005, 60 min.)

Filmmaker David Vassar will introduce film

Discover Hetch Hetchy With Harrison Ford
David Vassar, Environmental DefenseNamed after grass native to its valley, Hetch Hetchy was once glorious, pristine wild land. It could have the same splendor as its neighbor, Yosemite Valley. Our short film, featuring Harrison Ford, tells the story of the Hetch Hetchy Valley and the move to restore it. (United States, 2005, 28 min.)

A short panel discussion on restoring Hetch Hetchy will follow the film. Environmental Defense staffers and Ron Good of Restore Hetch Hetchy will field questions.

Following the film program, blues musicians (including Ron Thompson and Angela Strehli) will cap the evening’s entertainment.
