In case you didn’t think anything really that exciting was going on this week in the world of clean tech…guess again…
Hermann Scheer will be in town to talk about renewable energy politics and policies with Vinod Khosla, formerly a General Partner at Kleiner Perkins and founder of Sun Microsystems, and Michael R. Peevey, President of the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
Dr. Scheer has chaired as well as initiated numerous international research and development conferences, including the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion Conference in Glasgow (2000), the World Wind Energy Conference in Berlin (2002) and Capetown (2003), the Earth Conference on Biomass for Agriculture and Industry (1995), the European Conference Solar Energy in Architecture and Urban Planning (1993, 1996, 1998, 2000); the First International Conference on Financing Renewable Energies (1997), the 1st and the 2nd World Renewable Energy Forum (2002 and 2004), and the International Parliamentary Forum on Renewable Energy (2004). His work has been
honoured with the inaugural SolarWorld Prize (1998), the inaugural World Prize on Bioenergy (2000), the Alternative Nobel Prize (Right Livelihood Award, 1999), and the Gold Medal of the Union for Small Hydropower. TIME Magazine recognised him in 2002 as one of five “Heroes for the Green Century.” World Wind Energy Award 2004.
Vinod has been labeled the #1 VC by Forbes and Fortune recently labeled him as one the nation’s most influential ethanol advocates, noting “there are venture capitalists, and there’s Vinod Khosla.” Vinod Khosla founded the firm in 2004 and was joined by partners David Weiden and Samir Kaul, as well as chief scientific officer Doug Cameron in 2006. Khosla Ventures is based in Menlo Park, California.
From 1995 until 2000, Mr. Peevey was President of NewEnergy Inc. Prior to that, Mr. Peevey was President of Edison International and Southern California Edison Company, and a senior executive there beginning in 1984. Mr. Peevey has received many awards recognizing his leadership in developing energy policy and promoting recognition of California’s diverse population, including the Pat Brown Legacy Award in 2003, being named “Man of the Year” by the Power Association of Northern California, recognized with the Climate Action Champion Award by the California Climate Action Registry in 2004, and leadership recognition from American Council for Energy Efficiency (2005), the Utility Minority Access Program (2006), and the California Solar Energy Industries Association (2006).
It’s hard to beat this interesting trio in conversation, so stay tuned. I’ll blog on the discussion next week, as both events at which Dr. Scheer will be speaking are currently sold out. The event is sponsored by the German American Business Association-CA’s Clean Technology Industry Group, MIT Club of Northern California’s Clean Technology Program and K&L Gates law firm.
Covering both California and Germany, speakers will discuss different approaches to solar incentives, the roadmap for the future of solar energy and US / European vision of energy autonomy.
