Konarka’s Power Plastic

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Thanks to my very dear friend Nicole Kidd, who sent me a release updating me on the latest with Konarka.

This is a fascinating company.  And I need to get my friend James Timberlake talking with them because as an architect, and one of the architects behind Smartwrap.

Konarka’s technology would very easily, if I’m correct, fit into the Smartwrap model, as part of the fabric of a SmartWrap enveloped building structure. The polymer, or "Smart Wrap", could be developed using Konarka’s "power plastic".

Konarka builds power plastic that converts light to energy. The company develops and manufactures light-activated power plastic meant to be inexpensive, lightweight, flexible and versatile.  The idea behind the product is to provide low cost, embedded sources of renewable power within a plastic surface, providing the capability to integrate energy generation functionality into everyday devices, allowing for wireless application functionality.

To make sure I attribute credit where credit is due, Konarka had a little help with the development of this polymer…LEONHARD KURZ GmbH & CO.KG, a leader in the research, development and manufacture of polymer electronic technology, has a non-exclusive partnership with Konarka to support them in the development of this light-activated power plastic. The companies are engaged in a multi-year, multi-phase collaboration to accelerate the development of Konarka’s organic photovoltaic technology, with KURZ having committed significant capital, equipment and resources to the joint activities.
