The Federal Opposition wants one third of Australia’s waste water to be recycled for industrial and agricultural use by 2015.

Labor’s water spokesman Anthony Albanese says the party also wants national guidelines for recycling developed to build public confidence and increase water security in urban areas.

He says about 10 per cent of waste water is currently reused, and he believes increasing that to 30 per cent is ambitious but attainable.

“We believe that if you establish water markets, support recycling and encourage investment in water infrastructure from both the public and the private sector then you can achieve that target,” he said.

Mr Albanese says the Opposition would also develop comprehensive, national guidelines for recycling to build public confidence and increase water security in urban areas.

Mr Albanese says adding recycled water to drinking supplies is not part of Labor’s plans at the moment.

“By and large, that’s not necessary for most towns and cities around Australia,” he said.

“So there’s no point going down that track which would distract from the need to have this 30 per cent national target on water recycling.”

The Opposition says it is up to the Commonwealth to take the lead in the push towards using recycled water.
