Since I’m going to be spending a little bit of time focused on greener computing/all things related to that topic, I thought this was interesting…just ran across it this morning - randomly, actually:
EPEAT™ is….
EPEAT is a procurement tool to help institutional purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their products.
How EPEAT™ Works
EPEAT is a system in which manufacturers declare their products’ conformance to a comprehensive set of environmental criteria in 8 environmental performance categories:
* Reduction/Elimination of Environmentally Sensitive Materials
* Material Selection
* Design for End of Life
* Product Longevity/ Life Cycle Extension
* Energy Conservation
* End of Life Management
* Corporate Performance
* Packaging
I would like to see additionally what the supply chain looks like that the computer manufacturer uses, from logistics and transportation considerations, to the design of the buildings these products are manufactured in, to what kind of feedback loop is being integrated into this system that includes feedback customers are providing re. additional ‘greening’ of this process. Anyway, interesting find, at least for me, for the day, as I have some homework to do. Have a great day!
